Docman Client Installation

Introduction

This document will guide you through the Docman install process.

Docman’s install files are stored on the network location, so an install CD is not required.

If you are reinstalling Docman on an existing workstation, you may encounter different messages and additional steps as the installer notifies you that certain files already exist. Please refer to the list at the end of this document for details.

Note: If you are planning on replacing a workstation that acts as the site’s Docman server, please contact our Support team to arrange a server relocation.

The Docman Network Drive

The first step of a client install is to ensure that the network drive is mapped. Docman’s client install files are stored along with all other Docman applications in the Docman network location, and the network drive is required for access.

The network drive appears under the Network Locations in My Computer, and will most commonly have a drive letter of H or N and the name Shared, although exact network drive specifications vary between sites. If you cannot find the network drive, consult your IT Administrator or refer to the Network Drive Configuration guide.

Double-click the network drive to enter it, then go into the PCTI\Docman7\Programs\Client Install directory.

Double-click the SETUP_NEW_CLIENT icon in the Client Install folder.

This starts the install process.

One of the first windows to appear is a prompt with the options OK and Cancel. This is used halfway through the install; ignore it for now.

The client install window appears shortly afterwards. Click Next.

The next screen prompts for your name and organisation. These details are optional and do not restrict your use of Docman if you leave them blank. Click Next to proceed.

The install process now begins. The length of time this takes varies depending on the workstation specifications, network speed and version of the installer on your site.

The installer informs you when the client install is finished. Click Finish to continue.

The prompt that appeared at the beginning of the install will still be in the background. Click OK on this now to begin the second half of the client install. This opens a Setup & Configuration window with settings specific to your site’s Docman install. These settings are already configured and do not require any adjustment. Click Begin to start the install.

An installer for MySQL ODBC 3.51 Driver may appear halfway through this install. MySQL is the database format that Docman uses, and the installer initiates the MySQL install if it is not already on the workstation. Keep clicking Next on the MySQL install windows, then click Finish and click Ok to the Docman installer’s prompt.

Docman resumes the client install once it has confirmed MySQL is installed, and completes the install shortly afterwards. Click Close to end the client install process.

The Docman install is now complete.

Reinstalling Docman on an Existing Workstation

Reinstalling Docman on a workstation is a common solution to a number of issues. If you are reinstalling Docman on an existing workstation, there are some additional factors to consider; the installer detects the existing Docman install and presents you with screens that vary from a new workstation install.

The installer prompts you to select a maintenance option; modify, repair or remove.

Modify usually allows you to select certain configuration options during an install. This option is rarely used during a client reinstall; all of Docman’s configuration options are specified by the Docman engineer during the initial install, and do not require changing except in the case of a major change in the site’s IT infrastructure.

Repair replaces all the system files Docman installs, fixing any problems caused by corrupt or missing files. This is the recommended option when performing a client reinstall.

Remove uninstalls the Docman application from your PC. Please note that this does not remove the workstation licence from the workstation; this will need removing manually. Removing and reinstalling the client from scratch can sometimes resolve issues that a Repair install fails to fix.

Select an option and click Next. The install continues as normal until the end, where you are asked whether you want to clear the current Start Menu Docman directory. The Start Menu directory is under Start > Programs > PCTI Solutions.

This typically only contains a shortcut to the Docman icon, and is okay to delete. Click Yes to continue the install.

The client install will now finish with no further prompts.
